With over 400,000 working carers in Scotland, it is more important than ever for employers to support the carers in their workplace. 1 in 5 carers have left their job due to struggling to balance work with their caring responsibilities.

Unpaid caring looks different to everyone. They may care for a parent with dementia, a child with Additional Support Needs or a partner with a long-term health condition. Someone’s caring responsibilities might include:

  • Personal care
  • Emotional support
  • Help with finances or paperwork
  • Attending medical appointments with the person being cared for

Unpaid carers have many rights in the workplace and it’s important as an employer, or as a line manager, to familiarise yourself with them. Carers rights are set in legislation, including:

  • Equality Act 2010
  • Carer’s Leave Act 2023
  • Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Act 2023

Unpaid carers may also have the right to parental leave, time off in emergencies, and other support from their employer.
