Navigating health and social care support is a common responsibility for carers, which VOCAL can help with. Social care in Scotland is delivered by Self-directed Support (SDS), which offers greater flexibility and control over how care is arranged. If you request an assessment of need, your local authority has a duty to carry it out.
Our carer support practitioners can advise you on:
Understanding care packages
We can help you:
- Review current care arrangements
- Understand how SDS works, what choices are available, and how it could help you and the person you care for
- Navigate the process of requesting an assessment
- Help you prepare for an upcoming assessment
- Make informed choices about managing budgets and accessing services
Advocating for your rights and choices
We can help you navigate the care system so that you are aware of your rights and local authority duties. This can better prepare you to advocate for yourself and the person you care for.
As part of our Carer Training Programme, we run a regular free training session for carers called An introduction to Self-directed Support. To find out when the next session is, visit our Carer Training site.
If you can’t make it to the live event, you can watch a recording of a previous session on Youtube.
