The 2nd Carers Parliament took place on 1st October 2013, with 180 delegates from the UK and Europe present. The focus of the parliament was on ‘Carers’ Rights’ and many carers shared their experiences of caring and the barriers they encountered in trying to find the support they needed.

The morning session was interrupted by a surprise visit from Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, with an announcement that the Scottish Government are bringing forward new legislation specific to carers and young carers rights to ensure that they receive the necessary support to help them in their caring role. Consultation on the new legislation will start at the end of 2013 and carers will be encouraged to get involved in the consultation process.
