The Equality Act 2010 protects people with protected characteristics from discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

The Government Equalities Office and Citizens Advice have created a document explaining how the Equality Act 2010 affects unpaid carers.

Discrimination may be direct or indirect. The protected characteristics are: 

  • Age 
  • Disability 
  • Gender reassignment 
  • Marriage and civil partnership 
  • Pregnancy and maternity 
  • Race 
  • Religion or belief 
  • Sex 
  • Sexual orientation 

Carers are protected from discrimination or harassment through their association with the person they care for, if this person has a protected characteristic, such as being older or disabled.
