You can receive the payment once a year and you have to apply for each payment separately. You have to wait one full year between applications.
Eligibility
- You are age 16, 17 or 18
- You live in Scotland
- You have been caring for 1, 2 or 3 people, for a total of at least 16 hours a week, for at least the last 3 months
- You do not receive Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment
- The person or people you care for receive a qualifying benefit
If you care for someone for 35 hours per week or more, you may be eligible for Carer Support Payment instead.
Qualifying benefits received by the person you care for
- The daily living component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- The middle or highest care rate of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), including Child Disability Living Allowance
- The middle or highest care rate of Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (SADLA)
- The middle or highest care rate of Child Disability Payment (CDP)
- The daily living component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP)
- Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP)
- Attendance Allowance
- Armed Forces Independence Payment
- Constant Attendance Allowance
The meaning of “providing care”
- Helping with dressing, washing, cooking, shopping or using the toilet
- Taking the person you care for to a doctor’s appointment
- Helping with household tasks, like managing bills, shopping or translating important documents (if English is not the first language of the person you care for)
- Spending time with the person you care for
- Providing social and emotional support
- Giving the person medication or reminding them to take it
