Welfare Reform Bill and Carers Allowance

The publication of the Welfare Reform Bill today confirms that Carer’s Allowance will remain separate from the proposed Universal Credit affecting other benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance and Income Support.

The news follows campaigning from a broad alliance of UK carer organisations who have responded positively to the announcement. There are still concerns however about the impact major reforms to the benefits system will have on carers. Carers Allowance still remains the lowest benefit of it's kind and carers who currently receive means-tested benefits will be moved onto the Universal Credit.

Carers living in Edinburgh and Lothian should contact VOCAL's Carer Support Team on 0131 622 6666 if they have any questions or concerns about how the Welfare Reform Bill affects them.
