Soaring value of family care - new figures released

In Scotland, the soaring value of family care now equals the cost of the NHS, and the clear message is that our society could not function without the massive contribution made by Scotland’s carers. The new estimates, contained in a report called 'Valuing Carers 2011', were calculated by Carers Scotland and the University of Leeds.

The figures show the care provided by friends and family members to ill, frail or disabled relatives is now worth a staggering £10.3 billion every year - in Edinburgh the estimated replacement cost for unpaid carers has increased by nearly 40%, from £554.5 million to £771.1 million.
