About Family Support Addictions

What about me?
As family and friends, you can play an important role in the lives of people with alcohol or drug problems. You can help to support an individual to make important changes. This comes with a cost, however, as the chaos of addiction does not just affect the individual but also those close to them. At times it can feel like being on a rollercoaster; there can be worry, stress and difficult decisions.

How can Family Support Addictions help?
The provision of independent emotional support and information can reduce isolation, help you to get more balance in your life and to think through the role you want to play. We provide one to one support - over the phone or face to face. This can be an opportunity to offload concerns in a neutral space, or to discuss how the situation is affecting you and what you want to change. We also provide information, and can help you access other appropriate services and support. As well as meeting one to one we also run monthly support groups, courses, occasional workshops and de-stressing activities. Often meeting other people in a similar situation can be invaluable.  Please contact us for further information.

What geographical area does the service cover?
Our office is located in VOCAL Carers Centre in central Edinburgh. We can support friends and family members throughout the city where the concern is around someone's drinking or drug use. Meetings can be held in the office or somewhere nearer where you live. There is also a service based in South Edinburgh which provides support where the issue is around gambling, in addition to alcohol or drug use.

How can I get in touch?
You can contact us by phone, email or by post. Anyone can make a referral, either yourself as a family member or friend, or a professional.
